Who knew that one month in Germany would make me realize that I could love a complete stranger like I love my own family.
Just when we thought things could not get any better after the trip to Cuba, we spent a month working hard and before we knew it the Global class was back on another plane headed for Deutschland. The trip to Germany was more than just a month spent living in a different country, but rather a time to immerse ourselves in the beautiful European culture, sharing special memories with our best friends. From the moment we arrived in the small city of Zweibrücken, we were warmly welcomed by our German exchange families. Everyone was ecstatic to be finally reunited with their partner after a long eight months of being over 6000 kilometers apart.
When we arrived, we spent the first long weekend with our German families experiencing their home life, getting to know the city of Zweibrücken, and even experiencing the beautiful cities surrounding the town. Following the long weekend, the Global Class began going on trips to various cities in the country, visiting multiple historical monuments, cathedrals and castles. The class shared heart warming memories on these trips and learned a lot about the history of each city from information shared by enthusiastic tour guides. Although sometimes the bus rides could be excruciatingly long, it was an incredible time to spend with our best friends, and to simply witness and take in the changing landscapes through the windows.
Two weeks into the trip to Germany, we headed to Munich and Vienna for the long anticipated big trip. We spent a day in the extravagant city of Munich and were given free time to explore the area. After settling in the hotel, Mr.Babcock took some of the class on a night walk through the city, allowing the students to experience Munich from a new perspective. Following our stay in Munich, we bussed straight to Vienna. From the moment we stepped out of the bus to view the Alps, we were all left speechless by the beauty that surrounded us. Through tours of the area and free time in the city, Austria became a country that we all gradually started to love.
The trip to Germany was not only a time to travel with 27 of our best friends, it was also a month that allowed us to discover more about ourselves as well as the culture in Germany. For many of us, this was our first time travelling across the ocean without the company of our family, forcing us to become independent, open-minded individuals. From walking through the town and grabbing coffee at the small coffee shops in the city, or sitting by the river with the German friends we'd come to know, Germany was an experience none of us will forget.
The month spent in Germany went by way too fast and before we knew it, the Global Class was saying goodbye to their German partners and German families. Many tears were shed during this heartbreaking farewell, and very few of us realized that this was more than just a goodbye to our partners, but our Global family as well. On our flight back home, we spent some of our last moments as a group. As we walked together through the doors to exit the Toronto Pearson Airport, we knew that this was not truly a goodbye. The Global Class has made so many memories this semester, through our trips to Cuba and Germany, and our time in Portable 11 that no time apart can diminish the bond that we share.
